Wireless technology – Handy but Dangerous?
We have noticed with interest the huge plug for wireless internet connectivity in your home – a certain advertisement currently being aired depicts walls being pushed down to reveal people in a variety of poses wirelessly hooked up to the internet.
It is great to be able to have this versatility in our homes but we would stress that it may be vital for you to maintain good postural habits when using the laptop in your home especially whilst sitting on the couch or whilst enjoying the sun outdoors. This would be especially so for those individuals who already have sedentary computer based jobs. The cumulative effect of these ‘wireless-type’ postures at home could have detrimental effects on the ability of your body to withstand the rigors of your working day. See Corporate Solutions - Cumulative Effects for more information.

We would suggest that you should attempt to adopt more formal, upright postures, ideally with a suitable desk when using the laptop. We would also recommend that even if you are following this advice you should even limit the time you spend using a laptop to as little as 20-30 minutes per hour and make sure that you get up from sitting often. If you are using a laptop at home more often then you should invest in a docking-station to further help reduce the strain on your body. This docking station comprises of an external mouse and keyboard which you plug into your laptop.

In addition to these postural factors there would be concerns with glare from using the laptop outdoors. Glare is caused when you are looking at a computer screen and the sun is postioned behind the screen.
The other concern involves reflection when using a laptop outdoors. Reflection is caused by sunlight reflecting off the screen and into your eyes. It is important to consider these factors and position yourself accordingly to avoid them. Glare and reflection can cause eye strain and headaches.
