Cranio-Sacral Therapy for Babies

Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch manual therapy approach that enhances the body's natural healing capabilities and has been shown to be effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and loss of function. It was initially discovered by Dr William G Sutherland in the early 1900's and scientifically validated and developed by Dr John Upledger. The Upledger Institute continually researches and improves upon existing scientific techniques.

Why do babies need Cranio-Sacral treatment?

So you have just entered the world of parenthood. Only to discover that your otherwise healthy baby cries all the time or never sleeps and you think it's all your fault...

When your baby is born, nature has designed that she has scull bones that are not joined, but rather float freely so that she may easily pass through the birth canal. These bones are meant to pass through the canal and the pressure of a normal birth on them is also part of the normal and natural process of coming into this world. Things often don't turn out quite that perfectly - an extended or shortened birth duration, a less than optimal positioning, forceps and suction cups and caesarean section all change the way in which the head develops. Other factors such as always lying the baby on only his back or one side also influences the alignment of the head.

These variations from the optimal are often small and may self correct (particularly when breastfed). Alternatively a cranio-sacral therapist uses very gentle facilitation techniques to encourage a more optimal alignment. This is often all that is needed to make your baby more contented and relaxed.

How will my baby experience Cranio-Sacral therapy?

It is important to note that cranio-sacral techniques are gentle and not painful for your baby. Depending on the severity of the dysfunction your baby may experience a wide range of reactions to the therapy. It it generally very comfortable and your baby will feel relaxed and at ease. His body is being "listened to" - we all like to feel that we are understood and babies are no different. Sometimes he may have restrictions that are emotionally upsetting for him, and he will let you know how he feels about these by crying when they are released.

After the therapy she will most likely be tired and want to rest in a comfortable spot. The parents may find that her mood improves immediately following the therapy or it may get worse for a day or two before it improves.

Should all babies get CST?

Perhaps I am biased, but YES. Babies are very sensitive and respond very quickly and well to the therapy. It is not invasive and helps to solve much discomfort before it really becomes a problem. It may be all that is needed for your baby to maintain a state of comfort and well being as she enters this busy world.
