Examples of Workplace Scenarios

Employee X wakes one morning with severe back pain. He can move around reasonably easily and is not in pain sitting but his job in the library involves a lot of lifting and bending which he can not do.

Scenario 1

Employee X calls in sick with ‘ back pain’ he is told by his manager to see his GP for a sick note. He duly visits his doctor and is signed off for a week and told to rest. At the end of the week he goes back to the doctor and is signed off for a further 2 weeks as the pain has not resolved. By the end of the 3rd week the pain is a little better so he returns to work. Residual pain impairs his performance, and a dip in moral following 2 weeks out of work impacts his productivity so that after 2 weeks back at work he requires a additional week off. This pattern continues.

Cost: $2,596 ( based on 3 weeks temporary cover at salary of $45,000).

In addition to this there are ongoing cost implication of lowered productivity and the likelihood of the case becoming a gradual process claim which could run to thousands of dollars.
 
Scenario 2

Employee X calls in sick with ‘ back pain’ he is told by his manager to make an appointment to see the physiotherapists who case manage an early intervention programme for the company.

As the physiotherapists are familiar with the employees role and duties they realise he will need to work in a modified role and advise a desk based period of 2 weeks while his back settles down. The employee is not signed off work as it is important both physically and psychologically to remain active during the rehabilitation period. A treatment plan is devised involving manipulation, acupuncture and exercises .

By the end of the second week after 4 sessions employees pain is completely resolved and he returns to his original role with full productivity and enhanced job satisfaction as he feels his employer has invested in his wellbeing.

Cost: approximately $300 in physiotherapy treatment
