Referral to Multidisciplinary Case Management
- Rehabilitation and Graduated Return to Work Programme

Where significant pathology exists i.e. severe acute injury and chronic long standing pain which has required specialist opinion, injection or surgery, then complex rehabilitation is required to recondition not only the site of injury but also the individual to the rigors of work life.

Understanding the workplace, the forces expected of the role they perform, and the life outside of work, enable decisions around suitable graduated return to work programmes. The aim is to work harden the individual whilst allowing the injury the appropriate recovery time.

It is important for graduated return to work programmes to be managed by a specialist physiotherapist or occupational therapist in conjunction with any other specialist involved. Many studies have suggested that it becomes less likely and more difficult to return an individual to work as time goes on. It is therefore vitally important to keep an individual in work doing alternative or modified duties whenever possible.

This multi-disciplinary case management will assist the quick and efficient recovery of the injured structure and help resolve the difficulty of returning an individual who has been completely removed form the workplace.

Assessment of Work Role Suitability, Including FCE as indicated

In rare occasions severe injury renders the individual unable to return to their normal role and duties.

This difficult decision can be aided by performing an FCE which gives objective measures regarding an individual's ability to perform key tasks and sustain the loads required for the role.

Recommendations by a specialist physiotherapist or occupational therapist around appropriate long-term loading can enable the individual to still participate in the business albeit in a different role.

There may also be the need for long-term injury rehabilitation.
