What is Visceral Manipulation?
Visceral Manipulation (VM) or "organ specific fascial mobilization" consists of gentle mobilization (including direct stretching) of the viscera and their connective tissue to encourage normal mobility, tone and tissue motion of these structures. It involves working directly with the organs and their adjacent and supportive tissues to restore their normal structure/function and motion relationships. For an organ to be healthy and have optimal function there needs to be motion. When one organ cannot move adequately in relation to its viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions (scars) or displacement, it works against the body's other organs and muscular, membranous, fascial and osseous structures, causing chronic irritation. This in turn paves the way for disease and dysfunction.
Tissues lose their normal motion when they become inflamed. Many factors can cause tissue inflammation including: infections, direct trauma, diet, emotional stress etc.
How is Visceral Manipulation performed?
It is based on the specific placement of the therapist's hands on a specific organ to encourage normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera and their connective tissues. These gentle techniques can potentially improve the functioning of individual organs, the systems the organs function within and the structural integrity of the entire body and cannot be addressed pharmacologically or via neuro-musculoskeletal relationships.
Due to the delicate and often highly reactive nature of the visceral tissues, gentle force precisely directed reaps the greatest results.
Who will benefit from Visceral Manipulation?
90 percent of musculoskeletal conditions have a visceral component. This means that someone suffering from lower back pain may have a restriction of their colon or kidney fascia. Pain in the right hip and knee may be caused by a restriction in the fascia of the liver. In other words, there are a vast number of problems that may be partially or completely rectified with this treatment approach.
