Self Awareness and Self Responsibility

When the educational programme has been effective individuals will have good self awareness and be able to;
  • Recognise that discomfort is normal but will have a ‘first aid ‘plan which they can use to control it.
  • Understand the factors that may be contributing to their discomfort.
  • Understand changes that they can make to reduce their discomfort.
  • Use the information and have resources, such as web-based information, to self-manage the problem.
  • Understand the importance of an injury proofed work space which might include using the right chair

Early Reporting of Discomfort ► Pain ► Injury

Individuals need to be aware when the discomfort may be progressing along the continuum and when to request support and to how to utilise the Early Intervention programme.

Effective Team Leaders, with the right skills training, will then be able to monitor and actively manage the employees work. This may involve referral into the Willis Street Physiotherapy Early Intervention programme or a workstation assessment.

It is essential in a successful Health and Safety system that employees feel comfortable reporting discomfort early. Early active management leads to early resolution of symptoms and happier more productive workplaces.

Discomfort reporting
  • If an individual has tried self management for a short period of time (generally 2-4) days but have been unsuccessful in being able to resolve their discomfort, then there must be a clear pathway for reporting and utilising Early Intervention.
  • Establishing clear reporting channels and encouraging appropriate reporting is a critical success factor for effective resolution of the discomfort. Quick and effective resolution will have a significant impact on the cost of this episode of discomfort.

Team Leader Decision Making

It is critical that the Team Leaders feel that they have the necessary skill and confidence to mange the initial presentation of DPI.

They should have the ability to give advice to the individual at their workstation which may include a reminder of how to interact correctly in each particular situation.

They should also be confident to know when someone may need to be pulled form a particular work situation and be able to decide what alternate or light duties may be necessary to help the situation improve. They should also know when the time is right to refer on for help from Willis Street Physiotherapy.
